The Perry-Sharp Plan is a Good One

The business community, normally skeptical of any tax reform, is strongly supporting the Perry-Sharp plan. The Texas Association of Business, major chambers of commerce and associations of Texas Realtors, energy, technology, healthcare and educators have endorsed the plan.

Texas REALTORS® made history at the Capitol

More than 2,000 Texas REALTORS® and property owners rallied on the south steps of the Capitol April 17 to show support for the Perry Sharp plan that provides much-needed property tax relief in Texas.

The Texas Association of REALTORS® has historically favored a low-rate, broad-based business tax to replace the current business franchise tax in Texas. The proposal from the Texas Tax Reform Commission is a low-rate, broad-based business tax that will close legal loopholes that have allowed some businesses in Texas to restructure simply to avoid any business tax liability.

Texas Needs to Eliminate the Property Tax

Lawmakers should heed the warnings of the Texas Supreme Court by choosing "a new path altogether" for financing public schools.

In short, a patchwork solution of more money from new taxes is not a permanent fix. This court admonition is significant but consistently overlooked. The so-called "permanent" fixes resulting from the Edgewood decisions have proved illusory. Gov. Ann Richards heralded the expanded franchise tax and Texas Lottery as ways to fix state finances and supplement to public school financing.

Using the Projected Budget Surplus for Property Tax Reduction

Because the Texas Supreme Court implored policy makers to “choose a new path” for public school finance, the Texas Conservative Coalition Research Institute (TCCRI) Task Force on State Taxation makes recommendations in anticipation of the Third Called Special Session of the 79th Legislature.
