Conservatives in Texas have worked hard to get conservatives elected to office. For the first time, Republicans hold every statewide office and the majority in both the Texas House and Senate. But government is continuing to grow. Now the real work begins!

The hallways of our state capitol are not filled with individuals lobbying on behalf of taxpayers, but millions of our tax dollars are being used to lobby for more of our tax dollars.

Here are the facts:

  • If state spending had been held to inflation plus population increases from 1990-2003, Texas taxpayers could have saved $8.7 billion in 2003.

  • Local government spending exceeded population growth and inflation from 1992 to 2002, costing Texas taxpayers an additional $3.5 billion in 2002.

  • School district spending outpaced population and inflation from 1990-2001 costing Texas taxpayers $5.4 billion more in property taxes in 2000-01.

Americans for Prosperity's Citizen Watchdog Program has been launched to give taxpayers a voice. The Citizen Watchdog Program's mission is to train citizens to monitor spending in their own backyards (city, county and ISD spending) as well as to monitor the votes of their state and federal elected officials. Conservative officeholders who truly believe in limited government are given the cover they need to continue to work to limiting the growth of government, while those that have “lost their way” are held accountable.

Training schools have been held in Austin, Houston, Corpus Christi and San Antonio.

Americans for Prosperity Foundation, in partnership with the Leadership Institute, is offering citizen leadership training schools in Tyler August 21 & 22 and Dallas, Sept. 11& 12. Those wishing to register may email mmartinez@afptx.org . free of charge (registration is usually $125 for the Leadership Institute grassroots training schools).
