As
we ease (?) into the political season, I’ve
been doing some web surfing to see what’s
going on in the world of politics. Guess what I
found out …NOTHING. Yes you read that right.
According to a large portion of the web sites
I visited nothing has gone on since 2002, while
on
others nothing has happened since 2001!
At
the beginning of 2003, the Texas Legislature
(78th session) met for their constitutionally
mandated
140 days. Fireworks were going off everywhere.
Insurance and Tort Reform were two big topics,
followed by Education and what needs to be done
with an out of control (Robin Hood) school finance
system. Finally, Congressional Redistricting sent
the “Chicken D’s”, “Nifty
Fifty”, or whatever your local paper called
them, to Ardmore Oklahoma for a much needed vacation.
And then Sine Die.
Special
sessions (1, 2 ,and 3) started and ended with
more vacation time for one-third of our overworked
state senators who went to help the Albuquerque
economy. Redistricting passed and is now winding
it’s way through the never ending oversight
by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal
Court system. The final outcome will be decided
in either Washington, D.C., or a federal court,
not by the citizens of Texas.
The
only remaining question is have you done your
part to help educate the citizens of Texas on these
and (many other) issues? If you are not the owner/part
owner of one of those web sites in paragraph one,
then have you “surfed” to those sites
and provided feedback to those who own and purportedly
update them? Have you sent an e-mail to anyone
on the “Contact Us” page and asked
if anything has happened since the October 2001
quarterly/monthly meeting?
So
let me restate paragraph one … Now that
the political season is upon us! All of us need
to check our web sites:
1. Do you have the current contacts with correct
e-mail addresses, phone numbers (if used), snail
mail addresses (if used), etc.
2. Is the information current and relevant to the
upcoming filings and candidates for local offices.
3. Has any of the information discussed above been
added to your website either from local articles
or articles from other linked sources.
There is no excuse (except laziness) for your
websites or those you visit to not have current
information on candidates and where they stand
on issues. Those issues are what affect us as citizens
of Texas. One of the easiest ways to keep your
site current is to copy or link to articles that
you received in the form of newsletters (like this
one). All of this information needs to be shared
with as large an audience as possible.
Now
let’s go to work on affecting issues
of importance to us!
